Recycled rail, stile, railway, north of Ram Alley, Wiltshire
The public footpath crossing the railway here is protected on both sides by a stile. The one on the north side is modern but nonetheless incorporates a section of old rail in its construction. The cross-section of the rail suggests it is a really old one. There is obvious surface rusting but it remains in good condition indicating that it was made from high-quality iron. I recall reading somewhere that many rails used in Victorian days came from Krupp, a well-known German manufacturer.
