Water Treatment Ponds
Water Treatment Ponds
Nearby Force Crag Mine was last operated in 1991 after being in use for over 150 years. Zinc, lead and barytes were mined there with cadmium and copper also present. These metals continue to enter the water coming from the mine resulting in a failure to meet modern water quality standards. The National Trust, who now owned the mine, in partnership with Coal Authority, the Environment Agency, and Newcastle University has recently completed treatment to filter out the metals before entering Coledale Beck.

Two ponds have been constructed on the site of a former mine lagoon, the uppermost filled with a limestone and compost treatment mix. The water feds through this compost mix before flowing into the lower pond which will be vegetated with soft rushes, to provide filtration of any solids, before finally discharging into the beck.

The scheme is first of its kind on this scale in England. See LinkExternal link for more details.
