A gloomy evening shot and a sad sight for history lovers, as well as pilots, is the area containing the pond, which was once the site of the historic Doncaster Airfield (former WWII R.A.F. Doncaster, not the international Robin Hood Airport at Finningley).
Doncaster Council was determined to close it, and despite some "reprieves" which bought it some extra time, it was finally closed at the end of 1993. Within a week or so of its closing, a bulldozer had been driven through the runway to ensure there was no going back.
Many people connected with the very active flying school and maintenance facilities were put out of work. The school and helicopter facility also trained many young fixed-wing and helicopter pilots who went on to work as commercial and airline pilots. This was in addition to the popular air experience flights offered, for example, as birthday presents for families and friends of the local people.
The aerodrome also provided a flying area for model aircraft, was used by a parachute club, and provided a landing place for jockeys flying in to ride at the adjacent racecourse and for businessmen involved with local industries.
Historical pictures of the aerodrome, as well as an aerial shot of its destruction, can be seen at: LinkExternal link (Archive LinkExternal link )
Ironically Doncaster's aviation history is now celebrated as a tourist attraction in a museum near the old airfield. See: LinkExternal link
