Typical Cotswold cottages at Little Barrington
Typical Cotswold cottages at Little Barrington
These rather picturesque cottages are built of the pleasingly mellow Cotswold stone, which is an oolitic (love that word) Jurassic limestone, as far as I recall from my long - ago Polytechnic geology modules. Ooids are basically small fragments of shell or similar material which were washed around in shallow marine environments, in the course of which they gradually acquired a coating of calcium carbonate, and - like other fossils - they were buried in sediments which later became rocks. That took some remembering, and a little help from the internet!
