Rugby Radio Station
Rugby Radio Station
Barbed wire prevents access to the radio station site but the battered and lop-sided sign imparts an air of neglect and dereliction. The sign reads:
DANGER: Keep to the road. Electricity can kill. Keep away from all masts and overhead wires.
A wind farm can be seen in the distance.
Rugby Radio Station
Rugby Radio Station was first opened in 1926 with a large very low frequency transmitter. The following year the site initiated the first transatlantic telephone service. During the cold war it was used for transmitting messages to submarines and the array of tall masts became a landmark for miles around, especially at night when the aircraft warning lights were visible against the sky. However, it has been closed down in stages with the tallest masts demolished in 2004 and 2007, although in 2014 many smaller masts still stand. The site has been earmarked for a major new housing estate with a projected 6,200 homes and a population of 15,000.
