When this photograph was taken the commemorative block had received its interpretive panels. Also, as a nice touch, on the top was placed a genuine US Army hat and a cross. Unfortunately there are thieves everywhere and within a matter of days the cross had been taken. It was a few weeks before someone stole the hat. Probably sensibly the cross has not been replaced. However the hat has and the replacement appears to be more securely fixed than the original. It is to be hoped that everyone will now have the decency to leave this memorial untouched. Many of the young men who passed through this camp sadly lost their lives on the landing beaches at Omaha (Normandy, France) in June 1944. May they rest in peace.
