Harecastle Tunnel at Kidsgrove, Staffordshire
Trent and Mersey Canal. This is the north portal of the tunnel. A narrowboat emerges having taken 36 minutes to navigate the tunnel. The average time is quoted as 45 minutes. The black door to the left of the boat leads to a short section of towpath which remains. The rest has been removed, so low roof problems for crews are less severe, though they still have to keep heads down in some places.
