In the Great Chamber of Tonbridge Castle
The original motte-and-bailey Tonbridge Castle was built by Richard Fitz Gilbert soon after the Norman Conquest to guard the crossing of the River Medway. The motte still exists and has a path to the top. Before 1100, the de Clares (descendants of Fitz Gilbert) replaced the wooden castle with a stone shell keep. This was reinforced during the thirteenth century, and in 1295 a stone wall was built around the town. The twin towered gatehouse, the inside of which is seen here, took 30 years to build and was completed in 1260. The site was purchased by the local council in 1900, who now use the adjacent mansion as offices. The grounds were made into a public park.

The occasion here was a Medieval Fair in the grounds of the castle. A bonus was being able to look around the gatehouse. This is the largest room - the Great Chamber. See LinkExternal link for a photograph of the outside.
