West Dean College
West Dean College
This building built in 1622 in the Jacobean style of the day on the site of the original medieval manor house. It was owned by the Peachey family in 1738 and the James family in 1891. It was subsequently inherited by Edward James in 1912 when he was just four years old, and finally took control of the estate in 1934. Being an ardent supporter of the arts and crafts movement, he foresaw that after WW2 such skills and craftsmanship could be lost, so he vowed to set up his house as a college to preserve the old trades and create new skills. This he finally achieved in 1964 with the setting up of the Edward James Foundation Trust, and the creation of West Dean College in 1971.
