Wartime Weekend 2014 (17), Blunsdon Station
Alec is a representation of a figure, part real, part mythical, who became famous, or infamous depending on your point of view, during, and in the austerity years after, the second world war, the spiv. In those days of rationing, queues and shortages of most commodities, characters like Alec would supply them to those both able to pay and not unhappy about their provenance. These goods were said, perhaps apochryphally, to have fallen off the back of a lorry. Of course, as Alec pointed out to me, sometimes it was necessary for someone to give them a bit of a push. Alec is a regular at these weekends, both here at Blunsdon LinkExternal link and elsewhere.
Swindon and Cricklade Railway's Wartime Weekends
The S&CR LinkExternal link runs various events on its preserved railway. One of the more well-known is the Wartime Weekend held annually in September. The weekend is focused mainly, but not exclusively, on the second world war. These occasions allow numerous special-interest groups the opportunity to display and demonstrate their invariably military-based artefacts such as vehicles, uniforms and weapons. The highlight of the event is a battle re-enactment, normally set in France after D-Day as this enables the three main combatants in the Western European theatre, Britain, Germany and the United States, the chance to play their parts. The scenarios enable the participants to fire lots of blanks and make lots of noise and smoke. Victory rotates, one year the Allies win, the next it's the Axis. All very fair really.
