Remains of a field boundary
Remains of a field boundary
A low mound, receding from the photographer's position, and heading towards a point a little right of centre, is the remains of a field boundary. There are several to be seen in this area; they are not marked on maps. For example, another boundary, similar and parallel to this one, but about 40 metres to the north-east of it, is shown in NS2474 : Remains of a field boundary.

For background details, see NS2474 : Remains of a field boundary.

The slopes here are not only divided up by old field boundaries, but are covered by cultivation traces in the form of patterns of furrows. Further up the slope, these traces end abruptly at a long mound NS2373 : Linear mound near the Greenock Cut that I have taken to be similar in role to the head dyke of a township, in that the land below it was cultivated, while that above was rough grazing.
