See NS2373 : Linear mound near the Greenock Cut for the main description of this feature, and click on the end-note title for other views of it.

As I note at the link just cited, this boundary was more prominent than the old field boundaries below it, and it appears to have marked an important upper boundary, with cultivated ground below it, but only rough grazing above.

The present view is back up towards the path that accompanies the Greenock Cut; the path itself is not far up the slope, just beyond the line of darker vegetation. The mound is easily visible from the path (see NS2373 : Linear mound near the Greenock Cut for a view from there), but it is probably not usually given much thought, if it is noticed at all. It is not marked on OS maps of any period, but it clearly pre-dates the Greenock Cut, which slices through it (the Cut itself opened in the 1820s: see LinkExternal link for another contributor's article about it).
Linear mound near the Greenock Cut
The area near the Greenock Cut LinkExternal link is crossed by many old field boundaries. However, far more prominent than most of them is a linear mound running from NS23117362 to at least NS23707391; it is 740m long (660m in straight-line distance). Like the other old field boundaries nearby, this mound pre-dates the Cut (which slices through it at NS23537383). The mound, a very substantial construction, appears to have been an important upper boundary (of an estate, or of land associated with a particular farm): the ground downhill of the mound is furrowed and subdivided, while the ground uphill of it is not.
