Churchyard tombs
Churchyard tombs
Two fascinating tombs immediately south of St.John the Baptist's church, a coffin slab and tomb chest .... reputedly the tombs of Sir Ascelin Waterville and Sir Reginald Waterville respectively. Sir Ascelin de Waterville is credited with building the church in 1218 as thanks for his safe return from the Third Crusade (1189-92). Sir Reginald is also hailed as a Crusader Knight and their documented histories are bona fide ...... though the tombs are 16th and 17th century and clearly not 13th century.
