RAF Neatishead - the R12 bunker
RAF Neatishead was built in 1941 as a Ground Control Intercept station from where Fighter Controllers, backed up by a wide range of support staff, could direct RAF fighters to attack enemy aircraft. After the end of WW2 and the beginning of the Cold War, the UK defences were reorganised. In 1954, a new main Operations centre - an underground two-storey bunker (seen here) designed to withstand nuclear attacks was constructed, and the station continued to play an increasingly important role as a Sector Operations Centre (SOC) which continued to be used until 2004. The radar station at Neatishead, now called a Remote Radar Head, today still provides radar, ground-to-air radio and data links coverage as part of the UK Air Surveillance and Control System (ASACS) in support of national and NATO air defence.

The station's Cold War bunker is for sale and the wartime Control Room today houses part of the RAF Air Defence Radar Museum. Besides exhibits related to radar the museum also has two rooms designated to RAF Coltishall. The close ties between the two stations originate from the time when the radar station's personnel was housed at Coltishall.
