Grand Union Canal: Aylesbury Arm: Merrymead Farm Winding Hole
A winding hole is a large basin cut into the side of a canal that enables long narrow boats to turn through 180 degrees. This one has an overspill weir at the end, obscured by the reeds in this view. The winding hole is shown on the earliest large scale Ordnance Survey map available on line, dating from around the 1880s, suggesting it was part of the original fabric of the canal.
