Site of Smith's Mill
Site of Smith's Mill
An area of flat ground to the left of the wall corner on the far side of Mill Beck is the site of Thomas Smith's Smelt Mill
Smith's Mill was built in 1767, but due to disputes with another local mine owner, the mill dam, watercourse and mill were destroyed or damaged several times between 1769 to 1771. Twelve of these men were imprisoned overnight in the cells at Richmond. The mill was eventually abandoned, and slate & wood was scavenged from it in 1784.
