Grane Mill, Haslingden and its Steam Engine :: SD7922
As its name suggests, Grane Mill had its origins in the Grane valley, probably as a water powered spinning mill but was moved to the site at Longshoot, just off the main Bury Road in 1906. This site allowed more space for extensive weaving sheds and good communications for transport.

The 500hp horizontal cross-compound twin-cylinder steamengine was built by S S Stott of Haslingden, whose works were just across the road and installed in 1907. It drove 15 ropes which connected to the overhead shafting in the mill. It powered over 1000 looms and also generated the electricity for lighting the mill.

The engine ran without a hitch until weaving ended in 1978, and the Grane Manufacturing Company went into liquidation, a victim of the run-down of the Lancashire textile industry. Unusually for a mill engine, it wasn't broken up when the mill closed but was preserved by Gordon Briggs and Dave Arnfield who has worked to restore the engine with the help of a small team.

One of the weaving sheds was demolished at the beginning of the twenty-first century , to make way for a small housing development but the engine and other parts of the site have been given protection as a Scheduled Monument (see HOB UID 1373678), and the remainder of the site was added to Buildings at Risk Register in 2004.

Along with its remaining weaving shed, the original Lancashire Boilers downstairs, office building and mill yard, it is hoped that what is left of the Grane complex will become a museum.
