NY9000 : Arch at the Beldi Hill smelt mill

taken 3 years ago, near to Keld, North Yorkshire, Great Britain

Arch at the Beldi Hill smelt mill
Arch at the Beldi Hill smelt mill
Situated at the foot of Swinner Gill just above the bridleway are these ruins. Unlike many similar remains at Gunnerside Gill they have not been consolidated by the YDNPA and are slowly but surely crumbling away. The smelt mill was built in 1771, re-built in 1840 and finally closed down in 1883. A short flue seems to have run up the slope behind as can be seen in this view NY9000 : Take your pick at Swinner Gill
