Cliffs east of Kimmeridge Bay, Dorset
Cliffs east of Kimmeridge Bay, Dorset
These Jurassic cliffs show some of the layers of mostly shales, clays and limestone in Kimmeridge Clay. Some harder layers of the shale will burn (and have been called Kimmeridge Coal), but the sulphurous fumes given off make it unpopular as a fuel source.

The bituminous layers of shale within the rock are the source rock for oil both locally and to a larger degree under the North Sea.
