Old Rectory Greese House Main Street Heysham
Old Rectory Greese House Main Street Heysham
According to the OS map, the Grade II Listed cottages here are unusually numbered, left to right, 3, 5 & 1 Main Street. The gable copings suggest that it was original thatched. Greese is possibly from the Latin for steps and the building was reportedly built by a John Clarkson during the period when William Ward was rector, Sept. 1638 - Oct. 1670. However a door lintel is inscribed 1680. Church Papers at Chester indicate a Mr Bushell (Brasenose Coll., Oxf., B.A. 1684) built a rectory-house at Heysham. Bushell was curate at Goosnargh from 1692 till his death in 1735. A new rectory was built south of the church in the early 18th century and a Tithe Map of 1838 indicates the Old Rectory was still owned by the rector and occupied by Joseph Procter and another illegible name.
The Laytham family moved into No. 5 in about 1916 and by the middle of the century the old rectory building contained 3 tea rooms, Hadath’s at No.1, Cook’s at No.3 and Laytham’s at No.5. The Cook's later acquired the Laytham's Tea Gardens. Hadath’s Tea Gardens was established in 1900 and finally closed in 1989. Mrs Lund’s Tea Rooms were started at No.3 in the early 1930s and prior to this No.3 had been the village post office.
