More of the Unconformity
When a much younger rock lies directly on top of a much older rock, the contact is termed an unconformity. Here, the limestones on the left were deformed and metamorphosed deep down in the crust of the Earth some 600 million years ago, then uplifted by tectonic movements to the surface and exposed by erosion, then covered by sandstones in Devonian times, about 400 million years ago. So that cleft through the middle of this image represents a gap of 200 millions years in the history of the Earth.
