Fat-hen alongside a sugar beet field
Fat-hen alongside a sugar beet field
Chenopodium album L. along the bridleway. This is a native summer annual found on cultivated land and waste places, and particularly partial to sandy loams such as this.
You'd think that with such a big head of seeds it ought to be useful for something. Not surprisingly, Fat-hen was once eaten as a vegetable, from Neolithic times until the 16th century when it was replaced in the diet by spinach and cabbage. It is rich in vitamin C. The seeds were ground into flour. In Canada, it was grown as food for pigs and sheep.
Alas it seems it is now just a pesky weed, and a very persistent one at that.
Not to sampled here in any case, since there is evidence that the path has been sprayed with Roundup at some point this season.
