TQ7778 : Hawthorn and blackthorn, old Egypt Bay

Hawthorn and blackthorn, old Egypt Bay
Hawthorn and blackthorn, old Egypt Bay
Seen growing along the landward side of the old seawall behind Egypt Bay. The trees are hawthorns, and caught my eye because the one in the foreground is carrying a much heavier crop of haws than the other two. Further ahead along the seawall there are clumps of blackthorn bushes, where I paused to pick a few dozen sloes.

The area of rough grazing to the left of the seawall was tidal salt marsh until the 1950's. The present seawall was built across Egypt Bay in response to the disastrous floods of 1953, which caused considerable loss of life just across the river on Canvey Island.
