Remains of the "Severn Collier" at Purton
A close up of the remains of the "Severn Collier", built as a motorised barge at Stourport in 1937. The engine was unceremoniously removed after her first trip as a loaded boat, when it was discovered that she was vastly underpowered and took eight hours to cover a journey of no more than a mile and a half! After this, she was used as a dumb barge until retirement and subsequent beaching at Purton in 1965.
More than most of the boats here, "Severn Collier" indicates the problems caused by the complete lack of any legal protection for the Purton Hulks. Bits of this boat have disappeared into local houses- the main beam being used in the 1997 refurbishment of a local cottage, for instance - and the complete bow section was set alight in an attempt to recover valuable bronze rivets for their scrap value. What remains here today is still subjected to raids by souvenir hunters and graffiti attacks by idiots. More information is to be found at the "Friends of Purton" website at LinkExternal link
