SP1620 : Top of the tower

Top of the tower
St Lawrence church has a fairly long history, but this striking feature on the west tower is not the original intention. Built in 1785, it has a rusticated base, Ionic pilasters at the angles, and a parapet with vase finials. The proposed spire that would have crowned it was discovered to be too much for the foundations, so a lead-covered dome was built instead.
