Corner of Grope Lane and Fish Street in Shrewsbury
Medieval street names often indicated the street's function or the economic activity taking place within it. For example here in Shrewsbury, Fish Street and nearby Butcher Row. Grope Lane formerly had a longer name, which included a 4-letter Anglo-Saxon word that was in common usage then but is arguably the most taboo word in modern English. The name indicated that this was an area of prostitution. Although the name was once common throughout England, it was later replaced by a more innocuous name. York went one step further than Shrewsbury. Its street was renamed Grape Street.
