TQ7825 : Bodiam Castle Moat

Bodiam Castle Moat
Bodiam Castle Moat
Although largely ornamental the castle was built to a military pattern and included a gatehouse, with portcullis, and an entry bridge across the moat. Originally the bridge to the island extended from the position of this photograph rather than from the left bank as it does now. Approach to the castle would therefore have been exposed to attack from the battlements before reaching the island. The weakness in the defence would have been the moat, which could be easily drained by breaching the retaining wall to the South of the castle and the direct approach to the 'back door'. Refer to picture TQ7825 : Bodiam Castle, Back Door for a view of the 'back door'.
