The entrance to Cowden station
The London, Brighton & South Coast Railway opened the railway between Hurst Green and Eridge on 2nd January 1888. Cowden station was opened on 1st October 1888. This is now on the Uckfield to Oxted line and is one of the few non-electrified railways in South East England.

Much of the line south of Hever station was singled in 1990 and at the same time Cowden's up platform, was taken out of use and all trains now use the former down platform. This is the one first reached through the entrance hall. Cowden station is well over a mile from the village of the same name along unlit country lanes.
