Towards Clevedon Pier
Towards Clevedon Pier
Looking north towards Clevedon Pier, erected for the Clevedon Pier Company. Opened in 1869, it was designed to serve steamers bound for South Wales. The opening of the Severn Tunnel in 1886 reduced this traffic. The pier has eight 100 ft arched spans leading to a landing stage. The slender spans were constructed from riveted broad-gauge railway track as designed by W.H. Barlow for the Great Western Railway. The pier was Grade I listed (the highest category) in 1971.
