This benchmark was established in 1851 during the First primary levelling of England & Wales, and was levelled with a height of 411.361 feet [125.383 metres] above mean sea level (Liverpool datum). It was included on the Sheffield to Birmingham levelling line and appears on the 1889 OS map. The surveyor's description was "No. 258. Bolt in South face of St. Bartholomew's Church, Erdington ; 2.63 ft. above surface." (Public Abstract p.363). The mark is to the left of the steps.
