SO6871 : Mamble Colliery

Mamble Colliery
Mamble Colliery
This pool is likely to be caused by subsidence of former colliery workings. The Blount family of nearby Sodington Hall SO6971 : Sodington Hall, Mamblestarted working for coal here in the early 18th century. Numerous pits were shown on the earliest OS maps. Subsequently brick pits were also dug but by reference to historical mapping I believe this to be mine subsidence. The footpath 100m East of here appears to follow one of the tramways as it is on a raised embankment.
