The engineer for the famous Royal Albert Bridge.
Royal Albert Bridge
The Royal Albert Bridge was constructed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel in 1859. It was opened by Albert, Prince Consort to Queen Victoria on 2nd May 1859, just four months before the great engineer's death (15th September 1859). The prince himself only lived on for a little over two years, dying on 14th December 1861.
The 172' high bridge extends 2188' (667m) from St Budeaux, Plymouth on the Devon side across to Saltash in Cornwall. It has two main spans each of 465'(141m) with a total of 17 further "lead in" spans. (I think 10 on the Devon side, 7 on the Cornish).
