Trinity Bridge, Salford
The Trinity footbridge linking Manchester and Salford was designed by renowned Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava. The 1.9m footbridge, named for the nearby Trinity Church (SJ8398 : Sacred Trinity Church, Salford), was opened in 1995 and connects the recently-developed Chapel Wharf area with the city centre. The whole structure rests on one single, 41metre tall pylon, leaned over at a rakish angle, from which the suspending tension cables hang down to suspend the footbridge deck beneath. Perhaps, not the most efficient design for a suspension bridge, but certainly a spectacular one visually.

Trinity Bridge was one of Calatrava's earliest bridge works and, to date, remains the only project he has completed in the United Kingdom.
River Irwell
The River Irwell rises on the Rossendale hills north of Bacup and flows south for 39 miles before joining the River Mersey west of Manchester. It was a very important river in the development of industry, during the Industrial revolution, in Lancashire.
