Calcining kilns near Wakerley: aerial 2014
Calcining kilns near Wakerley: aerial 2014
Just airborne from a fly-in and Macmillan coffee event at former R.A.F. Spanhoe, my eye was caught in the evening light by the silvery ribbon of the River Welland as it emerged from under the Welland Viaduct (SP9499 : River Welland, disused railway and Barrowden village (aerial 2014)). As I followed it I spotted these unusual structures next to it and to the disused railway.
They are the remains of calcining kilns at the Wakerley iron ore quarries, which were active only from 1916-21 as the ore was of a lower quality than had been hoped.
There was no direct rail link to Corby, and according to the industrial historian E S Tonks, Wakerley quarry was owned by the Partington Iron & Steel Co., the ore going to its Irlam Steel Works in Manchester. Calcining at the quarry reduced the volume of the ore and made it cheaper to transport.
This information was provided by John Sutton and Katy Walters and accompanies Tim Heaton's photo SP9499 : Four structures in the Welland Valley, west of Wakerley.
Michael Trolove adds that only two of these calcining kilns were completed and were never used. The bases for the other two were laid with concrete but the brick work was never started - see SP9499 : Two left standing.
The aerial shots also show what were presumably the contours of the quarry.
