Remains of railway viaduct, Richborough, Kent
The brick pillars are all that remains of a viaduct which carried a branch of the independent and impecunious East Kent Light Railways into the port area at Richborough. This network of railways was built to support the development of the Kent coalfield and in the hope that it would lead to massive industrialisation. The first line were opened in 1912 and eventually consisted of a route from Shepherd's Well on the Southern Railway's Canterbury to Dover line to Richborough Port, and another branch which was intended to run from Eastry to Canterbury. In the event it got no farther than a grassy platform in a field near Wingham, which it optimistically called "Canterbury Road station". The viaduct into Richborough Port was a frail affair. It is said that engine drivers were so worried about viaduct's fragility that they would wedge open the regulator and let the engine steam over by itself, the crew walking behind in case the viaduct collapsed under the train's weight! The Richborough line closed officially in 1950 although it hadn't been used for some years.
