NT2467 : New building at Fairmilehead
taken 10 years ago, near to Fairmilehead, Edinburgh, Scotland
Originally built in the late 1930s as the Hillburn Roadhouse, the art-deco roadhouse-style pub, later described as a 1950s public house, the Fairmilehead Inn, was abandoned around 2004. It was closed and boarded-up by 2009, and was put up for sale in July 2011. A youtube video from 2012 gives an idea of what the inn was like after it had been abandoned. Link . A report from 2013 gives a detailed account of the state of the inn at that time Link .
The new Outdoor Centre fits into the landscape quite well, with the appropriate background of the Pentland Hills, whose users it is intended to serve. There are also some flats and I believed there will be some other retail outlets as well. Much more sympathetic than the plans proposed, and abandoned, in 2004, although planning permission had been granted Link
The Big Red Directory Link notes that the pub is still open [June 2015] !
Previously there had been an early medieval settlement on the site.
