On Stronbae Hill 1
Heather looks attractive but walking through it is less so. Most of the small hills in this area have been seldom visited by walkers and - once you get there - it is not surprising: the ground is very rough and uneven - carpeted in a mixture of bog, heather, bilberry and bracken - such that it takes three times longer to traverse than would cropped turf. Also, until extensive felling was undertaken, many of the hillsides were covered with impenetrable spruce plantations and could not be accessed from the forest tracks.
