Clifftop on An Aird
In the background is the island of Raasay and MV Hallaig, the Caledonian MacBrayne ferry that serves Raasay from Sconser in Skye. This is a hybrid diesel electric ferry vessel built in Port Glasgow by Ferguson shipbuilders and it replaced the MV Loch Striven on this service in 2014. The ferry's name comes from a deserted township located on the south-eastern corner of Raasay, and the Raasay born poet Sorley MacLean wrote a poem about Hallaig, a reflection on the effects of the Highland Clearances which left the country empty, populated only by the ghosts of the evicted and those forced to emigrate.
