Former Gas, Light and Coke Company, Friar Gate, Derby
This is not alone among Victorian buildings in teetering on the edge of being hideously ugly. Just on the right side, I think, but it's touch and go. Never a dull moment anyway - the listing says it is an early example of a steel-framed building. The name of the original occupants is emblazoned across the frieze, which also incorporates the date, 1889. By Naylor & Sale. Grade II listed.
At the time partly or wholly in use as a casino.
