SY6872 : Entrance to Jordans Mine

taken 4 years ago, near to Easton, Dorset, Great Britain

Entrance to Jordans Mine
Entrance to Jordans Mine
Here the famous Portland Stone is not quarried, but actually mined. It is more economic now to extract the stone underground than to remove the overburden in the conventional manner. The mine is worked in blocks, 6 metres square, and every fourth block is left untouched to support the roof. See SY6872 : Deformed Laminae.
