Giant machine
Giant machine
A locally built machine, for a specific series of tasks. The driver told me that it consisted of French rollers, an off-the-shelf Italian slug pelleter, and the purpose made distributor for 'Avadex' treatment for Black Grass. This is a thiocarbamate based germination inhibitor which needs a very carefully controlled surface, hence the rollers. The target seed is planted deeper so is unaffected.

This machine, designed to do multiple jobs in a single pass, was developed by "A chap in Rippingale Fen", just up the road.

Farming is an astonishing trade. Since I left school the population of the planet has more than doubled, but where the dominant problem then was hunger, it is now obesity. We have more than quadrupled food production. Partly this is done by small local optimisations like this, where a crop can be brought in profitably by continual innovation.
