Bexley station
Bexley station
The first railway between London and Dartford was the North Kent Line via Lewisham, Blackheath and Woolwich. To reduce congestion on the North Kent Line and to give a more direct route between London and Dartford, the line via Sidcup was opened on 1st September 1866. This branched from the 1865 railway between Lewisham and Chislehurst at Hither Green (although there was no station at Hither Green until 1895). The route became known as the Dartford Loop but is now known simply as the Sidcup Line.

Bexley station opened on the same day as the line itself - 1st September 1866. The original station buildings have survived to the present day. This view from the up platform looks in the direction of Dartford.
