Village sign, Herringswell
The name Herringswell is thought to have derived from an Anglo-Saxon tribe, the Hyringa. But there's another clue - when the Fens were under water, Herringswell would have been on or near the coast. So perhaps herrings, as depicted on the village sign, really were the source of the village's name.
