The Port Royal
The Port Royal
This riverside pub has an unusual claim to fame: in 1823 the wife of the landlord of the Fountain Inn (now the Prospect) was discovered in the River Exe near Salmon Pool. Her body was taken to the Exeter Humane Society buildings - what is thought to be the current inn here - but was pronounced deceased. Records indicate the Port Royal was trading in the mid 1840s. The Exeter Amateur Rowing Club established themselves here in 1864; by the 1950s the club vacated their original boathouse and later the clubhouse - both buildings were taken over by the Port Royal.
