Inside the BCCI building
Inside the BCCI building
A long-disused office block at the southwest corner of St Andrew Square is being demolished. It was home to the Bank of Credit and Commerce International [BCCI], which failed spectacularly in 1991 with debts of £7billion, after investigations into its affairs showed widespread evidence of money-laundering, fraud and deceit. 30 UK councils lost deposits of £82m,of which the largest was the Western Isles Council, with £24m. As far as I know the building has been unused since then and 23 years after the bank's collapse the site is finally being redeveloped. Watch this space.
