Whitaside Tarn
These tarns in peaty upland areas are generally acidic and relatively species poor but the boggy areas around the tarn are important for curlew, lapwing and snipe.
The photograph was taken after an unusually long dry spell of several weeks but the level of the tarn compared with the surrounding land shows that the water table on the moorland is still not that far below the surface.
