Site of the goods yard, Earlswood Station
The goods yard dates from 1908 when the Birmingham & North Warwickshire Railway was established between Birmingham Moor Street and Stratford-upon-Avon – the Shakespeare Line. The site for the yard was excavated from rising ground; thus there is a steep bank on its northeast boundary. There were sidings and a cattle pen. Originally called Earlswood Lakes Station, it was the highest point on the line and therefore had facilities for watering locomotives, ie, a large elevated tank. It was closed in the 1960s. An OS map of the early 1970s shows the yard with no track and scrub growing on the bank. It can be glimpsed in a 1979 photo by Michael Westley SP0974 : Earlswood Station; note no water tank. Since then the site has become largely overgrown; the open ground in this photo is but a small part of it.
