Stretford Meadows Overflow Weir
The River Mersey sometimes overflows its banks. This overflow weir was built to allow water to take a different path to the normal channel of the river. Instead of passing under the Bridgewater Canal, 600 metres further south, the overflowing water would take this route. A bridge can be seen just to the left of the block of flats in the distance. It would allow two channels for the Mersey to take in times of flood. In the thirty years I have lived in Stretford, I have not seen it overflow here. The Sale Water Park on the other side of the Mersey has been used to allow extra water to leave the river. This pool is ideal for ducks and for young children collecting frog spawn. The red sandstone blocks have grooves worn into them from the shoes of thousands of children over time.
