Writtle Forest, now in private hands, was a medieval Royal Forest - a mixture of woodland and open plains. It has survived, largely unchanged, for hundreds of years and features prominent ancient wood banks which separate the boundaries of the individual woods or "springs" within the forest.
There are a number of public and permissive footpaths and bridleways throughout the forest.
