The fence running across the middle of the picture divides the reclaimed opencast land from the route of the former Great Central Railway. The photograph is looking northeast from a point a few metres off the Five Pits Trail.

Although, superficially well reclaimed land with realistic contours, the ground is poor. Drainage is very limited, the ground is hard and during wet weather, substantial amounts of water sit on the surface causing the top inch or so to be very muddy.
